NPSA (2010) National specifications for cleanliness : primary medical and dental premises. As part of the Health and Social Care Act 2008, Care Quality Commission (CQC) registration will require healthcare providers to comply with essential standards of quality and safety. This includes the need to protect those who may be at risk of exposure to infections. These national cleanliness specifications provide a framework for primary dental care providers and primary medical care providers to demonstrate to the CQC how they ensure their premises are clean and safe and meet the required standards.

NICE CLINICAL GUIDANCE CG139 prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections This clinical guideline (published March 2012) updates and replaces NICE clinical guideline 2 (published 2003). It offers evidence-based advice on the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infection in primary and community care. New and updated recommendations address areas in which clinical practice for preventing healthcare-associated infections in primary and community care has changed, where the risk of healthcare-associated infections is greatest, and where the evidence has changed.

The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc (APIC) is a multi-disciplinary voluntary international organisation with over 10,000 members. Its purpose is to influence, support and improve the quality of healthcare through the practice and management of infection control and the application of epidemiology in all health settings. The organisation, which is based in Washington DC, is led by an elected board of members who volunteer their time and expertise.
